Article: Hip Hop and Prison as Profit

I read this really great article about Hip Hop and Prison together as profit. It links how the media markets "criminal" rap to our culture which causes the enrollment of prisoners to increase. I'm not a great paraphraser, so I will give the facts. You read the article yourself, don't be lazy like me.

  • Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the biggest name in the private prison industry, contacted 48 states offering to buy their prisons.
  • Two months later, an anonymous email was sent out to various members of the music and publishing industries saying it determined that hip-hop music would be manipulated to drive up privatized prison profits. Some called it fraud because no name was listed.
  • Ninety percent of what Americans read, watch and listen to is controlled by only six media companies. #MESSAGE
  • Last year 232 media executives were responsible for the intake of 277 million Americans, controlling all the avenues necessary to manufacture any celebrity and incite any trend. #MESSAGE
  • The people who own the media are the same people who own private prisons.
  • Likewise, the largest rise in incarceration that the US has ever seen is in the early-80′s. (Crime has decline since then)
  • "The vast majority of the prisoner increase in the United States has come from African-American and Latino citizen drug arrests.”
  • The U.S. Sentencing Commission reported in March 2010 that in the federal prison system, even where convicted for the exact same crimes, people of color received prison sentences 10% longer.
  • Mainstream media continue to support hip-hop that glorifies criminality (drug trafficking and violence), and private prison interests.
Make sure you read the article and get some knowledge.

The album debuted at #1 overall  on the Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart. NWTS is the only Rap/R&B in the Top 10 this week, which features artists from Jay Z, Jhene Aiko, and Sampha.

Drake was not the only artist that hit a milestone recently. Jay Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail has passed the double platinum point this week. Jay Z sold a million copies to Samsung pre-released and now he has sold another million copies. (DAMN)

Music Monday Sum up

My music Monday

Started off with a flat in a very suspicious place where anybody who passed me gave me a suspicious look knowing damn they are probably the suspicious one. (Run on) but I was on my way to PovicNation's hip hop show.

Sometime later I got there. I walked in on Sonyae performance. She was performing a song called "damaged goods" I think. Ill check on that later. But everybody was vibing with her. I was in the back, so I could see nothing but heads bobbin. I was impressed.
Next up was taee fame sexy self. No groupie no groupie. He just has a nice voice and something good to look at. I think that was my first time seeing him perform.  His set was good. He performed his new single "dark thoughts" and some sexy sexy song that I need to find. Kizzy performed next. Another first time for me besides the cypher. She performed her "Versace" song and "Right now". She had people hype for both songs, especially the Versace joint. She was rapping so fast, I would've been out of breath. "VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE VERSACE"  I also liked the fact she change the flow on the Versace beat; made it in a new song.
The Rome Jeterr's set came up next. I swear he be everywhere I be or vice versa. He performed my shit on his newest mixtape; a song called " Auto pilot" that's my *beep* jam. "Niggas gas you up but they never down to ride" (word rome) then he performed "what you know" and another song. I be slacking on names
Anywho I had to leave to handle some business before I had to go to the cypher

But by the time I got to the cypher I was ready to record, my phone was on 27% WTF?! It be like that tho. The best cypher always when my phone trippin. I took some graffiti pics tho.

But the cypher was live. I guess because it was the full moon.  It was a big turn out. Too bad I don't have no footage. Guess you have to been there.

My first reviewing an hip hop show! Thank you Povic Nation for allowing me to have the chance to do that. Now I can better.

Rome Jeterr's Hot boys

Rome Jeterr's  Hot Boyz on "Wildin for Respect"

Dope Raleigh video. Rome sounds good on old 90s beat. Word play on classic timberland beat. I like Rome videos bcus they are simple but represent him. Not all that script movie stuff, straight to the point: my flow

Harlee's Collards Greens review

Here the link to the song on my tumblr
http://harleewood.tumblr.com/post/52687441141/schoolboy-q-feat-kendrick-lamar-collard-greens

Groovy Q feat. K dot produced by THC  & Gwen Bun. Mixed By Ali. This song is from SchoolBoy Q's debut album Oxymoron I like it. This song is an up-tune alien sound beat. "Chiddie chid Ching" it took me multiple times to actually like the song. The first time I heard it though, I liked K.Dot verse. He ripped it. One part he is taking straight Spanish. I like his verse better the Q's. It's a good vibe smoking song. I wouldn't really care to hear it the club. It's hippy trippy music. I'm guessing the "down with the shit" goes with the tittle.
